As summer is in it’s final month (trying to hold back the tears), I’m trying to savor every bit of sunshine and each warm breeze as much as possible with my daughter. I feel like we’ve been so lucky this year as temperatures have not escalated as they have in recent summers past and the rain has been kept mostly at bay. That being said, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite summer activities for those last beautiful sunny days and a few special events going on this month in our awesome neighborhood!
LeFrak Center at Lakeside: A brand new skating pavilion and event center with two rinks open for roller skating and the other for a water-play area that transforms into an ice rink in the winter. The water play area has over 40 jets of water streaming, accompanied by fun pop music (who doesn’t love jamming out to a little Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga while chasing your child) and a very decent Bluestone Cafe (beet burger is delish). If getting soaked is not on your agenda, put your roller skates on. Every Tuesday is Toddler Tuesday at 9:30am for kids 2-5, the event includes games, music, play activities, snacks and open skate time ($15). On August 17th there is a special PBS Dinosaur Train Day at 10am where there will be a meet & greet with Buddy the T-Rex, a special screening of “Classic in the Jurassic” and other activities and games (free)! Prospect Park Zoo: This is a must for every family – with a discovery trail that your child can explore and see red pandas, kangaroos, otters and more….to watching a sea lion get fed at the sea lion pool…to feeding the barnyard the sheep, goats and alpacas! I hear you can also try milking a cow here! During summer hours there are special events every day of the week, including storytelling and puppet fun on Tuesdays 11am – 2pm and Zoo Bingo games on Thursdays 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.
Brooklyn Botanical Gardens: There are a couple super-fun events going on here during the summer. Every Tuesday-Saturday there is the Kids Discovery Station between 10:30am-12:30pm at the Fragrance Garden where your child will enjoy a special planting or craft and learn about plants, worms and read garden stories (free with garden admission). For the older child between 8-12 there is the Midsummer Magic Plant Walk on August 13th at 5:30pm, where your child will learn about plants from mythology and brew up an elixir at the potions class ($12 members, $15 non-members).
Free Carousel Rides @ Prospect Park: Every Thursday 12-6pm in August all kids 12 and under can ride the carousel for free! How fun is that?! My toddler cannot get enough of this so I’m super excited.
As the summer nears it’s last final weeks I’m going to try to pack in as much fun as humanly possible. Cheers to an August full of water play, exploring and laughing (and maybe a few Italian ices and ice cream cones along the way)!!!
